A virus known as HOIC was applied carry out the massive attack from several Russian districts at once, causing the presidential site to crash and remain inaccessible for an hour.
HOIC (High Orbit Ion Cannon), described by the Gizmodo.com technology blog as a hacker super-weapon, is an application often used by the Anonymous group in DDoS attacks on websites. It functions by organizing followers around one targeted website and then overloads the server with fake visitors, crashing the site with heavy traffic.
Russian investigators traced the attack to the 17-year-old student, who resided in the closed military town of Zheleznogorsk.
