2010 Suzhou, China FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS Organized by: Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies (SGS), City University of Hong Kong in conjunction with Graduate School, University of Science and Technology, China (USTC) INTRODUCTION The 4th PhD Student Workshop (Suzhou) [第四届博士生学术论坛] will be organized at USTC – CityU Joint Advanced Research Centre, Suzhou from 7 to 8 April 2010. It aims to provide a forum for Hong Kong and Mainland students of project teams under the Mainland Collaboration Schemes to met and discuss their research findings and the latest advancements in their own discipline. The Workshop also aims to advance the participants’ understanding of important issues and frontier research in their own reseach area. KEY AREAS The Workshop will primarily focus on the following 8 key areas: 1. Applied Mathematics 2. Business and Management 3. Control and Mechatronics 4. Fire Safety and Nanomechanics 5. Web Services 6. Environmental Science 7. Information Engineering 8. Computational and Theoretical Materials Physics WORKSHOP FORMAT AND CALL FOR PAPERS The Workshop will consist of oral presentations given by Hong Kong and Mainland student participants and other academic activites. English will be the official language for the entire event. Participants should submit an abstract of about 200 words (including abstract’s title, authors’ names and their affiliations) to the Workshop Secretariat before 19 February 2010 via e‐mail sgworkshop@cityu.edu.hk. ELIGIBILITY Students under the Mainland Collaboration Schemes (with USTC, Tsinghua, Peking, Wuhan, Zhengzhou and Zhongshan Universities) are eligible to participate in this Workshop. To provide an opportunity for students from Hong Kong and Shenzhen to interact with students in Suzhou, SGS will provide additional funding to support the accommodation expenses for students from 6 to 12 April 2010 (i.e. a total of 6 nights). Interested students are advised to indicate the duration of their stay in the Registration Form to facilitate the arrangement f accommodation. PhD students of USTC who are studying in Hefei under the supervision of the supervisors participating in the Joint PhD Programm of USTC and CityU, are eligible to participate in this Workshop.
SPONSORSHIP Sponsorship will only be provided to support travel and accommodation expenses for students, who will present a paper in the Workshop. For students from Hong Kong, sponsorship could be obtained by applying for the Conference Grant (applicable to UGC‐funded students only) to cover only the cost of an economy‐class return air ticket between Hong Kong and Shanghai. The grant so awarded will not be counted towards the quota of Conference Grant. Reimbursement will be made upon the presentation of original receipt and boarding passes after the Workshop on actual cost incrred up to a maximum amount of HK$3,500. For students from Shenzhen (including students undertaking research activities in Hong Kong), funding support for an economy‐class return air ticket between Shenzhen and Shanghai will be provided. Reimbursement will be made upon the presentation of 2 written quotations (报价单), original receipt and boarding passes after the Workshop on actual cost incurred up to a maximum amount of RMB2,240. For students from Hefei who are studied under the Mainland Collaboration Schemes, funding support for a round‐trip travel by train from Hefei to Suzhou will be provided. Reimbursement will be made upon the presentation of original receipt on actual cost incurred up to a maximum amount of RMB280. The sponsorship is conditional upon the student is a registered student in the University at the time the Workshop held. The sponsorship approved only applies to this specific Workshop and cannot be used for other purposes. ABSTRACT PREPARATION Please refer to the attached “Abstract Guidelines” for details. 2010 Suzhou, China ABSTRACT GUIDELINES I. General Instructions 1. It is essential that the abstracts adhere strictly to the following guidelines. Failure to meet the requirements may cause delay in acceptance. (Please refer also to the attached “Abstract Sample”) 2. The abstract should: - Occupy no more than 1 page (Size: A4); - With NO illustrations, tables and references; - Not quote copyrighted text or data without permission; - Be using Times New Roman, point 12, single line spacing in MS Word (If this typeface is not available, the closest to it in size and appearance should be used); - Be proofread carefully. 3. Deadline for submission of abstract is 19 February 2010. II. Notes on Preparation of Abstract 1. Abstract Title Insert abstract title in the first row. Abstract title should be typed in capital letters, using Times New Roman, point 12, bold, single line spacing. Insert two hard returns between the abstract title and the authors’ name. 2. Name(s) of Author(s) The name(s) of author(s) should be started with the initial(s) and followed by the last name, e.g. R S C Wong. The name of the author, who will present in the Workshop, should be underlined. Name(s) should be typed in title case. Insert one hard return between lines. 3. Affiliation The affiliation of author(s) should be typed in title case. 4. Abstract Content Insert two hard returns before inserting the content. The abstract content should be typed in Times New Roman, point 12, single line spacing and the text margins should be justified.
